The year 1840 marked a significant era in American coinage, particularly for gold pieces struck away from the main minting facilities. This five-dollar gold piece, known as a Half Eagle, represents a remarkable survivor from the New Orleans branch mint. With a recorded mintage of only 40,120 pieces, finding one today in any condition is a noteworthy event for those who appreciate early American gold. The obverse of this gold coin displays the classic Coronet Head representation of Liberty, facing left with her hair secured and adorned with a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Encircling her portrait are thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1840 positioned at the bottom. This design captured the aesthetic of a young nation establishing its own visual identity through its currency. On the reverse, an eagle with outstretched wings clutches an olive branch and arrows, symbolizing a desire for peace coupled with a readiness for defense. The inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the central motif, while the denomination FIVE D. is placed below. Crucially, the "O" mint mark is positioned just above the denomination, indicating its origin at the historic New Orleans Mint. This particular coin has survived in an impressive state of preservation, certified as Almost Uncirculated 50 (AU-50), which highlights its minimal wear and retains much of its original luster.
