1842 Large Cent Sm Date Fine

0.0000 troy oz 1842 Fine

In the mid nineteenth century, American commerce relied on substantial copper coins that felt heavy in the hand. The 1842 Large Cent represents this era beautifully, showcasing the Braided Hair design that characterized the nation's one-cent pieces from 1839 to 1857. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this specific variety is distinguished by its small date size, offering a subtle variation for eagle-eyed observers of early American coinage. The obverse of the coin features a classic profile of Liberty, her hair neatly bound, facing left. She is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the year 1842 clearly marked below her portrait. On her coronet, the word LIBERTY is inscribed. Turning the coin over reveals a simple and dignified reverse design. The denomination ONE CENT is positioned at the center, framed by a continuous laurel wreath. Encircling this central motif is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This particular specimen survives in Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time circulating through the young republic.
