In 1842, the United States Mint produced a copper one-cent piece that stands out for its substantial size and classic artistry. This coin belongs to the celebrated Large Cent series, a time when the lowest denomination of American currency was minted on a scale far larger than the pennies we use today. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this specific coin has survived in Extra Fine condition, preserving the crisp details of its mid-nineteenth-century craftsmanship. The obverse of the coin presents a dignified profile of Liberty, her hair styled in an elegant braid. This depiction, designed by Christian Gobrecht, is framed by the word LIBERTY and the year 1842 stamped below the bust. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are nestled securely within a delicate wreath. Circling the entire reverse border is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, a proud declaration of the young nation's identity.
