In 1843, the United States Mint produced a gold five dollar coin, known as the half eagle, which carries a gold content of 0.2419 troy ounces. Crafted with a purity of 90 percent gold, it remains a tangible survivor of pre-1933 American coinage. The obverse features a profile of Liberty facing left, her hair secured by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies, with the date 1843 positioned at the bottom. This side of the coin was designed by Christian Gobrecht, whose work defined this era of American gold. On the reverse, Gobrecht's heraldic eagle dominates the center, displaying a shield across its chest. The bird holds an olive branch and arrows in its talons, symbolizing peace and readiness. Surrounding this central motif are the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination FIVE D.
