1843 Large Cent Mature Head, Lg Letters VG
In the decade before the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced large copper cents that feel remarkably substantial in the hand compared to modern pennies. The 1843 edition carries a classic representation of Liberty on its front face, facing left with her hair bound up, showing the design evolution of the nation's early copper coinage. Below her portrait, the date 1843 is clearly struck. The reverse of this copper cent features a delicate wreath that encircles the denomination, which is spelled out as ONE CENT. Encircling this central wreath is the bold inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This particular specimen survives in Very Good condition, displaying the honest wear of a coin that circulated heavily during a transformational era in American history.
