In the mid nineteenth century, the United States Mint operated a branch in the gold rush town of Dahlonega, Georgia. This 1845 half eagle represents a fascinating artifact from that Southern facility, carrying the distinctive 'D' mint mark on its reverse. With a mintage of only 90,629 pieces, these five dollar gold coins are highly sought after by those who study early American coinage. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, the obverse of this coin showcases the classic Coronet Head style, also known as the Liberty Head design. Liberty is depicted facing left, her hair secured with a coronet, surrounded by stars with the date 1845 positioned below. The reverse features a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, surrounded by the inscription 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and the denomination 'FIVE D.' positioned at the bottom.
