In 1845, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a copper large cent that represents a classic era of American coining. This piece belongs to the Braided Hair design series, which spanned the years 1839 to 1857. Struck in pure copper, these substantial coins were a daily staple of commerce in the pre-Civil War United States. The obverse of the coin features a dignified left-facing profile of Liberty, her hair secured in a neat braid and adorned with a tiara. This central figure is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the year 1845 stamped below. This elegant depiction was created by Christian Gobrecht. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are positioned at the center, framed by a continuous laurel wreath. Surrounding this central design is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This specific coin has survived in Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation while retaining the clear details of its historic mid-nineteenth-century imagery.
