1845 Large Cent Good

In 1845, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a copper one-cent piece that exemplifies the mid-nineteenth-century aesthetic of American coinage. This coin belongs to the Braided Hair series, a design type that spanned the years from 1839 to 1857. Crafted by Christian Gobrecht, the coin represents a distinct era in early American copper currency, minted long before the transition to smaller cent denominations. The obverse of this large cent features a left-facing profile of Liberty, her hair styled in a neat braid. A coronet rests upon her head, while a ring of thirteen stars encircles the central portrait, representing the original colonies. Below the bust, the date 1845 is clearly struck. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are positioned at the center, surrounded by a continuous decorative wreath. Enclosing this central design is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This particular coin is preserved in Good condition, offering a tangible look at a circulating piece of copper currency from the pre-1933 era of American coinage.
