0.0000 troy oz 1845 Very Fine

In 1845, the Philadelphia Mint produced a striking copper large cent that captures the aesthetic of mid nineteenth century American coinage. This piece belongs to the Braided Hair series, a design era spanning from 1839 to 1857. Struck in pure copper, these substantial coins were a daily staple of commerce long before the introduction of the smaller cents we use today. The obverse side displays a refined portrait of Liberty, her hair secured in a neat braid, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. Below her image sits the date of 1845. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are nestled inside a detailed wreath, which is itself surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing the enduring appeal of Christian Gobrecht's classic engraving.
