In the mid nineteenth century, the United States minted copper coins of a size that might surprise modern handlers. The 1845 Large Cent is a striking example of this early American coinage, struck in pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint. With a substantial presence, these coins circulated widely during a transformative era in the nation's history. The obverse of this coin features the Classic Head Liberty design, a representation of liberty facing left, surrounded by stars with the year 1845 positioned at the bottom. The reverse displays a detailed wreath enclosing the denomination ONE CENT, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA wrapping around the outer border. This particular specimen is preserved in Extra Fine condition, showing a remarkable level of detail for a copper coin that was meant for daily transactions. Out of a total mintage of 3,894,804 pieces, surviving examples in this state of preservation offer a clear window into the craftsmanship of early American coin production.
