1846 Large Cent Medium Date VF

0.0000 troy oz 1846 Very Fine

In 1846, the United States Mint produced a substantial copper coin that represents an era of changing American coinage. This Large Cent, struck in Philadelphia, belongs to the Braided Hair series, which spanned from 1839 to 1857. Weighing 10.89 grams and measuring 29 millimeters in diameter, its physical presence is much larger than the pennies in use today. The obverse displays a classic effigy of Liberty, her hair neatly bound, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. Below her portrait is the prominent date of 1846, showcasing the medium date style of that year's production. On the reverse, the coin features the denomination "ONE CENT" nestled inside a delicate wreath. Wrapping around the border is the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This particular specimen has survived in Very Fine condition, allowing us to appreciate the artistry of early American copper engraving.
