The 1846 Large Cent represents a fascinating chapter in early American numismatics, minted during an era when the Philadelphia Mint relied on manual labor to strike currency. Because these early coinage presses were powered entirely by hand, production numbers remained relatively small, making surviving pieces from this period highly compelling to study. Crafted from pure copper, this substantial coin belongs to a series that began in 1793 as the very first coinage issued by the Philadelphia Mint. Eventually, the rising cost of copper forced a permanent shift in United States coinage, leading to the abandonment of these large-format pieces in 1857 in favor of the smaller cents we recognize today.
