0.2419 troy oz .900 1847 Almost Unc

This five dollar gold piece from 1847 represents a long-running era of American coinage, with the design series spanning from 1838 to 1907. Struck with a gold purity of 0.900, the coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal. It was produced at the Philadelphia Mint, part of a total mintage of 915,981 pieces for that year. Over its long production run, this denomination was also struck at branch mints in Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY, all encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle guards a shield on its breast, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the five-dollar denomination. This classic design was created by Christian Gobrecht, and this particular survivor has been preserved in Almost Uncirculated condition.
