In 1847, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a substantial copper coin that represents a fascinating era in early American pocket change. Known as the Large Cent, this substantial copper piece is significantly larger than the pennies we use today, serving as a tactile connection to the commerce of the mid nineteenth century. The obverse of this coin features a profile of Liberty, her hair styled in a neat braid.
