1847 Large Cent VF

0.0000 troy oz 1847 Very Fine

In 1847, the United States mint in Philadelphia produced a substantial copper coin that represents a fascinating era of early American pocket change. Known as the Braided Hair type, this large cent is a physical reminder of a time when a single penny was a thick, heavy piece of copper, far larger than the cents we use today. This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing the clear details of its mid nineteenth century craftsmanship. The obverse features a refined profile of Liberty, her hair styled in a neat braid secured by a coronet. This central portrait is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies, with the year 1847 clearly struck at the base. On the reverse, the denomination of ONE CENT is boldly displayed in the center, enclosed by a continuous leafy wreath. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA wraps around the outer border of the design, completing a classic motif that defined American copper coinage from 1839 to 1857.
