1847 Large Cent XF

0.0000 troy oz 1847 Extra Fine

In the middle of the nineteenth century, the United States Mint produced large, substantial copper coins that feel entirely different from the minor coinage of today. This 1847 one cent piece, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, represents a fascinating era of American copper coinage when a single penny was a large, heavy disc meant for daily commerce. The obverse of this coin displays the Classic Head portrait of Liberty, facing left, with her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Directly below her image is the clearly struck year of 1847. This design, created by John Reich, brings a classical aesthetic to early American pocket change. On the reverse, a delicate wreath encircles the denomination ONE CENT. Surrounding this central design is the bold perimeter inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Preserved in Extra Fine condition, this copper cent retains crisp details in Liberty's hair and the leaves of the wreath, offering a wonderful glimpse into the artistry of early United States coinage.
