0.4838 troy oz .900 1847 Almost Unc

Struck in the mid nineteenth century, this ten-dollar gold piece represents a fascinating era of American coining. Minted at the New Orleans branch of the United States Mint, the coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.4838 troy ounces of the precious metal. Over the decades, vast numbers of these gold issues were melted down, making surviving specimens like this one especially notable for their preservation. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle her, representing the original colonies, with the year 1847 placed below. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield across its chest, clutching symbols of national strength. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the central image, while the denomination TEN D. and the O mint mark are positioned at the bottom. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, this enduring motif served as a cornerstone of United States gold coinage from 1838 to 1907.
