1847-O $10 Liberty Gold Eagle VF Details (Cleaned)

In 1847, the branch mint in New Orleans struck a run of ten dollar gold coins, each containing 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. Out of an initial mintage of 571,500 pieces, many of these gold eagles were melted down over the decades, making surviving specimens compelling objects of study. This particular coin, graded in Very Fine condition, shows signs of past cleaning, yet it still preserves the essential details of its mid nineteenth century production. The obverse features a left facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies, with the year 1847 positioned at the bottom. This design, created by Christian Gobrecht, was a staple of American gold coinage from 1838 to 1907. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands proudly with a shield across its chest. The bird holds symbols of national strength in its talons, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Below the eagle, the denomination is abbreviated as TEN D., accompanied by the O mint mark, which identifies this coin as a product of the historic New Orleans minting facility.
