In 1848, the United States Mint in Philadelphia struck a substantial copper coin that captures the aesthetic of mid nineteenth century American currency. This piece belongs to the Braided Hair series, a design era spanning from 1839 to 1857. Crafted entirely from copper, this heavy cent represents a time before small-sized pennies became the standard, carrying a physical weight and presence that surprises modern handlers. The obverse of the coin displays a left-facing profile of Liberty, her hair styled in a neat braid secured by a band. Thirteen stars encircle this central portrait, representing the original colonies, with the year 1848 stamped clearly below. On the reverse, the denomination "ONE CENT" is positioned at the center, framed by a continuous decorative wreath. Surrounding this central motif is the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This particular specimen survives in Very Fine condition, showing moderate wear but retaining crisp details in Liberty's hair, the stars, and the reverse lettering. It stands as a tangible survivor of early American copper manufacturing, showcasing the artistry of designers Robert Scot or John Reich.
