In 1848, the United States Mint produced a substantial copper coin that represents a fascinating era in early American currency. This piece belongs to the Braided Hair design series, which spanned the years from 1839 to 1857. Struck in Philadelphia, these large cents are significantly larger than the pennies in use today, offering a generous canvas for the detailed artistry of the era. The obverse of the coin displays a classic representation of Liberty. Her hair is styled in a neat braid, and her profile is encircled by thirteen stars, representing the original colonies. Below the portrait, the year 1848 is clearly struck. On the reverse side, the denomination of ONE CENT is prominently displayed in the center. This text is encircled by a delicate wreath, which is in turn surrounded by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
