1849 $1 Liberty Head Gold Open Wreath MS-63 PCGS

0.0484 troy oz .900 1849 PCGS

In 1849, the United States Mint introduced a tiny gold dollar that would become a fascinating part of American coinage. Minted in Philadelphia without a mint mark, this specific issue features the Liberty Head design on the obverse, surrounded by stars and the date of 1849. The reverse of this coin features the open wreath design, which frames the denomination of 1 Dollar. Struck from 90 percent pure gold with a gold content of 0.0484 troy ounces, this coin is a remarkable survivor of its era. Out of an original mintage of 687,567 pieces, this specimen has survived in exceptional condition, certified as Mint State 63 (MS-63). Its preservation allows us to appreciate the delicate details of the engraving just as they appeared over a century and a half ago.
