Minted by the United States Mint, this ten dollar gold piece from 1849 represents a classic era of American coinage. It is struck in 0.900 fine gold, containing 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. This specimen has been certified in About Uncirculated 53 (AU-53) condition, preserving the intricate details of its mid nineteenth century design. The obverse features a profile of Liberty facing left, her hair secured by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. A ring of thirteen stars encircles her, symbolizing the original colonies, with the year 1849 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with wings spread, a protective shield draped across its breast. The bird holds symbols of national strength while surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The face value, TEN D., is clearly struck at the bottom of the design, completing this historic gold issue.
