During the mid nineteenth century, the United States Mint produced a distinctive copper denomination that has since become a captivating subject for numismatic study. The Braided Hair half cent, minted from 1849 to 1857, represents the final design style of the smallest denomination in American history. Struck in pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint, these pieces showcase the evolving aesthetic of early American coinage before the denomination was permanently discontinued. The obverse of the coin features the elegant Braided Hair portrait of Liberty, facing left with her hair secured in a neat bun, bound by a cord.
