1849-1857 Braided Hair Half Cent VG-VF

0.0000 troy oz Very Good/Very Fine

During the mid nineteenth century, the United States Mint produced a distinctive copper coin that represents the final era of the smallest denomination in American history. Minted between 1849 and 1857, the Braided Hair half cent showcases a refined aesthetic that was characteristic of United States coinage during this period. The obverse of this copper coin features the elegant Braided Hair design, depicting Liberty with her hair bound up in a neat braid. On the reverse, the words HALF CENT are nestled within a delicate, detailed wreath, which is itself encircled by the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. These pieces, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, survive today in Very Good to Very Fine condition, offering a tangible look at the everyday currency of pre Civil War America.
