0.0000 troy oz 1849 Almost Unc

In 1849, the Philadelphia Mint struck a copper half cent that marked an important transition in American fractional coinage. This issue represents the very first year that Christian Gobrecht's Braided Hair design was produced for general circulation, following a period where only proof specimens were made. With a modest mintage of just 39,864 pieces, these small copper denominations served an essential role in the daily commerce of mid-nineteenth-century America. The obverse features a classic profile of Liberty facing left, her hair elegantly braided and secured by a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Below the portrait, the date 1849 is clearly struck. The reverse design presents a delicate, continuous wreath that encircles the denomination HALF CENT, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This particular coin survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of Gobrecht's artistry from the mid-1800s.
