1849 Large Cent Fine
In 1849, the United States Mint produced a copper one-cent piece that stands out for its substantial size and classic artistry. This coin belongs to the Braided Hair series, a design era that spanned from 1839 to 1857. Struck in Philadelphia, this particular issue represents a time when everyday pocket change was much larger than the pennies we use today, measuring a generous 29 millimeters in diameter and weighing 10.89 grams. The front of the coin displays a profile of Liberty, her hair neatly bound, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1849 is clearly struck below the portrait. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are positioned at the center, framed by a delicate wreath and the surrounding inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This specimen survives in Fine condition, showing honest wear from its time in circulation over a century and a half ago.
