1849 Large Cent Good

0.0000 troy oz 1849 Good

In 1849, the United States Mint produced a substantial copper penny that speaks to the daily commerce of a young nation. This piece belongs to the Braided Hair Large Cent series, a design era that spanned from 1839 to 1857. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin is composed entirely of copper, weighing in at 10.89 grams with a broad diameter of 29 millimeters, making it significantly larger than the pennies in circulation today. The obverse of the coin features a classic effigy of Liberty, whose head is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original American colonies. Below the portrait, the year 1849 is clearly visible. The reverse side displays a simple yet elegant wreath that frames the denomination "ONE CENT". Encircling this central motif is the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This particular specimen survives in Good condition, showing the honest wear of a coin that actively circulated through the hands of mid-nineteenth-century Americans.
