1850 Large Cent Fine

0.0000 troy oz 1850 Fine

In the middle of the nineteenth century, daily commerce in the United States relied on copper coins that were significantly larger than the pennies used today. The 1850 Large Cent represents this era of heavy, substantial coinage, minted at the Philadelphia facility before the transition to smaller coin sizes. The obverse of this copper piece features the Classic Head Liberty design, a portrait that came to define early American copper currency. On the reverse, the words ONE CENT are prominently displayed, encircled by a detailed wreath. Around the outer border of the reverse, the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is clearly struck, completing a design that is both simple and commanding.
