In the middle of the nineteenth century, American pocket change looked remarkably different than it does today. The 1850 large cent is a striking reminder of this era, minted from pure copper at the Philadelphia facility. This substantial coin, carrying a face value of just one cent, represents a time when even the smallest denominations were minted with impressive size and weight. The obverse of this piece displays the Classic Head Liberty design, showcasing a stylized profile of Liberty facing right, with the year 1850 clearly struck below the portrait. On the reverse, the coin features a delicate wreath that encircles the central denomination, which is spelled out simply as ONE CENT.
