In 1850, the United States Mint produced a substantial copper coin that represents a fascinating era of early American currency. This Large Cent, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is composed of pure copper and carries a significant weight and presence that contrasts sharply with the smaller cents of today. With a mintage of over four million pieces, this issue served as a workhorse of daily commerce in the decade leading up to the American Civil War. The obverse features the Classic Head Liberty design, showcasing a stylized portrait of Liberty facing left. Her hair is bound with a band that clearly displays the inscription LIBERTY, with the year 1850 positioned directly below the bust. This design, created by John Reich, offers a window into the artistic sensibilities of mid nineteenth century American coinage. On the reverse, the coin features a simple yet elegant wreath that encircles the denomination ONE CENT. Surrounding this central motif is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA along the outer perimeter. Preserved in Extra Fine condition, this specimen retains crisp details in the hair of Liberty and the leaves of the wreath, allowing modern observers to appreciate the craftsmanship of the era.
