1850 Liberty Seated Dime Good

0.0715 troy oz .900 1850 Good

This silver dime from 1850 represents a fascinating era of mid-nineteenth-century United States coinage. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, the coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. Even in a circulated, well-traveled condition, the coin retains the unmistakable character of its original mid-century artistry. The obverse features the classic depiction of Liberty seated. In this design, she holds a staff topped by a liberty cap in one hand while her other hand rests upon a shield, symbolizing both freedom and defense. The year 1850 is inscribed below this central figure. On the reverse, the coin displays its denomination, written as "ONE DIME", nestled inside a traditional wreath. Surrounding this central wreath is the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This sovereign ten-cent piece, designed by Christian Gobrecht, remains a tangible piece of early American minting history.
