0.0484 troy oz .900 1850 Almost Unc

In 1850, the United States Mint in New Orleans struck a remarkably small gold coin that would become a highly prized historical survivor. This tiny gold dollar, containing just 0.0483 troy ounces of precious metal, represents the early years of the nation's gold dollar denomination. Because vast numbers of these early gold issues were melted down in subsequent decades, surviving specimens are particularly scarce and fascinating to study. The obverse of this coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a simple wreath encloses the denomination of 1 DOLLAR and the 1850 date, surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This specific coin bears the "O" mint mark, indicating its origin at the historic New Orleans Mint. Designed by James B. Longacre, this coin survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, offering a tangible connection to the antebellum American South and the gold rush era.
