In 1851, the Philadelphia Mint produced a significant run of small gold dollars, striking over three million pieces. This particular specimen survives in an exceptional state of preservation, graded Mint State 64+ (MS-64+) with additional verification. It represents a fascinating moment in mid-nineteenth-century American coinage, when gold was beginning to play a more prominent role in daily transactions. The obverse of this tiny treasure features the classic Liberty Head design, facing left and encircled by stars. Struck from 90 percent pure gold, the coin contains just under 0.05 troy ounces of precious metal. Because it was minted at the main facility in Philadelphia, it bears no mint mark, a traditional characteristic of the nation's primary minting institution during this era.
