1851 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle AU
In 1851, the Philadelphia mint produced a run of 377,505 gold half eagles. These five dollar coins contain 0.2419 ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. Because they were struck in Philadelphia, they carry no mint mark, leaving the fields around the design clean and focused entirely on the artistry. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, designed by Christian Gobrecht. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1851 is struck boldly below her portrait. On the reverse, Gobrecht's heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield on its breast. The bird is surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the abbreviated denomination FIVE D. This specimen survives in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of the mid-nineteenth-century engraving.
