In 1851, the United States Mint produced a substantial copper coin that stands in stark contrast to the small pennies we use today. This piece, known as the Large Cent, represents an era when everyday currency carried a satisfying weight and a bold, artistic presence. Struck in pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint, this specimen has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of its mid-nineteenth-century craftsmanship. The obverse features an allegorical portrait of Liberty. Her hair is styled in a neat, braided fashion, secured with a band that clearly displays the word LIBERTY. Directly below this elegant profile, the year 1851 is deeply struck, anchoring the coin in the decade preceding the American Civil War. Turning the coin over reveals a traditional reverse design. A delicate wreath wraps around the center of the field, enclosing the denomination spelled out as ONE CENT. Circling the outer edge of the design is the proud inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Together, these elements form a classic example of early American coinage design, offering a tangible connection to the daily commerce of the 1850s.
