In the middle of the nineteenth century, the United States government circulated a substantial copper coin that felt truly significant in the hand. The 1851 Large Cent, minted in Philadelphia, represents an era when even the smallest denomination was struck in pure copper with a diameter far exceeding the pennies of today. The obverse of this coin features the elegant Braided Hair Liberty design, conceived by Christian Gobrecht. Her hair is neatly bound, sweeping back from her face, presenting a classic profile that defined American copper currency during this period. Below her portrait, the year 1851 is clearly struck. Turning the coin over reveals a simple yet dignified reverse design. A delicate wreath curves around the central denomination, which reads "ONE CENT". Encircling this wreath along the outer edge is the bold inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This particular specimen survives in Very Good condition, showing honest wear from its time in active circulation while retaining the essential details of its historic mid-century design.
