1851 Large Cent XF

0.0000 troy oz 1851 Extra Fine

In the middle of the nineteenth century, the United States government issued copper coins that were significantly larger than the pennies we use today. The 1851 Large Cent is a striking example of this early American coinage, minted in pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint. This particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the crisp details of its mid-century craftsmanship. The obverse of the coin features an allegorical portrait of Liberty, designed by Christian Gobrecht. Her hair is styled in an elegant, braided fashion, secured by a band that clearly displays the word LIBERTY. Below her portrait, the year 1851 is boldly struck, anchoring the coin in a pivotal era of American growth. On the reverse, a delicate wreath wraps around the central denomination, which reads ONE CENT. Encircling this wreath is the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The contrast between the detailed foliage of the wreath and the strong, clear lettering makes this reverse design a favorite for those studying early United States copper coinage.
