In 1851, the southern branch of the United States Mint in New Orleans struck a limited run of 263,000 gold ten-dollar coins. Today, encountering one of these Liberty Gold Eagles in an exceptionally well-preserved state offers a direct window into mid-nineteenth-century American commerce. This particular specimen has survived the decades in About Uncirculated AU-58 condition, retaining much of its original luster and detail after more than a century and a half. Struck from 0.4838 troy ounces of 90 percent pure gold, the coin features the classic Liberty design on its obverse, dated 1851. The reverse displays the proud eagle design alongside the denomination and the distinctive 'O' mintmark, which proudly denotes its origin at the New Orleans facility.
