Struck in the decade preceding the American Civil War, this 1851 Gold Eagle represents a fascinating era of United States coinage. Minted at the southern branch facility in New Orleans, Louisiana, this ten-dollar piece carries the distinctive "O" mint mark on its reverse. With a historical mintage of 263,000 pieces, each surviving specimen offers a tangible connection to mid-nineteenth-century commerce. The coin features the classic Liberty Head design created by Christian Gobrecht. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Liberty is depicted wearing a coronet inscribed with her name, surrounded by a ring of thirteen stars representing the original colonies.
