Struck in the mid nineteenth century, this ten-dollar gold piece represents a classic era of United States coinage. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, the coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. Originally, the Philadelphia Mint produced 263,106 of these pieces in 1852, though many coins from this era were melted down in subsequent decades, making surviving specimens particularly intriguing to study. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. A ring of thirteen stars encircles her, representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield draped across its chest. The bird is surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, written as TEN D.
