1852 Large Cent XF

In the decade preceding the American Civil War, the United States Mint produced substantial copper coins that feel remarkably substantial in the hand compared to modern pennies. The 1852 Large Cent is a prime example of this early American copper coinage, minted in Philadelphia during an era when these heavy cents were a cornerstone of daily commerce. The obverse of this coin features the elegant Classic Head Liberty design by Christian Gobrecht. Liberty faces left, her hair bound by a band inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the year 1852 placed below. On the reverse, a delicate wreath encloses the denomination, which is spelled out fully as "ONE CENT". Encircling this central motif is the bold legend "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This particular specimen survives in Extra Fine condition, preserving the crisp details of Gobrecht's engraving and the rich texture of the pure copper metal.
