In the decade preceding the American Civil War, this 10-cent silver coin circulated through the daily transactions of a rapidly growing nation. Struck in 1852 at the Philadelphia Mint, this piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing approximately 0.0715 troy ounces of the precious metal. As an official issue of the United States government, its face value and metallic purity were fully backed by federal authority. The design on the front of the coin showcases Lady Liberty in a seated position. She holds a staff topped with a liberty cap in one hand, while her other hand rests upon a shield, representing protection and freedom. The reverse side features a delicate wreath that encircles the words stating the coin's denomination, "ONE DIME." This classic imagery, created by designer Christian Gobrecht, remains a beloved representation of early American coinage.
