In 1853, the Philadelphia facility of the United States Mint struck this ten-dollar gold coin, representing a classic era of American coinage. Containing 0.4838 ounces of actual gold weight, this piece of pre-1933 gold coinage showcases the artistry of Christian Gobrecht, whose designs defined a major epoch in the nation's currency from 1838 to 1907. The obverse of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield draped across its breast. The eagle is surrounded by the legend naming the United States of America along with the ten-dollar denomination.
