In 1854, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of just 54,250 ten-dollar gold pieces. Today, surviving examples of this Liberty Gold Eagle offer a tangible look at mid-nineteenth-century American coinage. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, each coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal, representing a standard of circulating currency from an era long before paper money dominated daily commerce. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty, her hair styled upwards and secured with a coronet, surrounded by stars with the date 1854 positioned below. On the reverse, an eagle with outstretched wings holds an olive branch and arrows, shielded by a patriotic crest. The legend reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, while the denomination is expressed at the bottom as TEN D. This particular specimen has survived the decades with enough detail intact to receive an About Uncirculated 53 grade, preserving the artistry of a bygone era.
