In the middle of the nineteenth century, daily commerce in the United States relied on copper coins of a scale that surprises modern observers. The 1854 Large Cent is a remarkable survivor from this era, minted in pure copper at the Philadelphia Mint. This coin represents the final decade of the traditional large-sized cent before the nation transitioned to smaller, alloyed pennies. The obverse of this one-cent piece features the Classic Head Liberty design. Liberty is depicted facing left, her hair bound with a band inscribed with her name. Below her portrait, the year 1854 is clearly struck. This design showcases the evolving artistic standards of early American coinage, capturing a distinct aesthetic from a growing nation. On the reverse, a delicate wreath encircles the denomination, which is spelled out as ONE CENT. Surrounding this central motif along the outer border is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Preserved in Very Fine condition, this coin retains clear details of its original engraving, offering a tactile connection to the everyday transactions of the 1850s.
