0.4838 troy oz .900 1855 Almost Unc

Struck in 1855, this ten-dollar gold piece represents a classic era of American coinage. Minted in Philadelphia, the coin does not bear a mint mark, which distinguishes it from those struck at branch mints. The coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.4838 troy ounces of the precious metal. Out of a total mintage of 121,701 pieces, this specimen has survived in Almost Uncirculated condition, preserving its intricate details for over a century and a half. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, designed by Christian Gobrecht. Her hair is secured by a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1855 is clearly struck below the bust. On the reverse, a heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield across its breast. The bird is surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TEN D. at the bottom. This design remains one of the most recognizable and enduring images in the history of United States gold coinage.
