In 1856, the New Orleans Mint produced a silver ten-cent piece that captures the artistic spirit of mid-nineteenth-century American coinage. This Liberty Seated dime, struck with a purity of 0.900 silver, contains approximately 0.0715 troy ounces of precious metal. Surviving in Very Good condition, it offers a tangible look at the craftsmanship of a bygone era. The obverse of the coin displays Liberty in a seated position upon a rock. In her hand, she holds a staff topped with a Phrygian cap, a classic symbol of freedom. The reverse side features the words ONE DIME encircled by a detailed laurel wreath. Positioned directly beneath the denomination is the distinctive O mint mark, indicating its origin from the historic coin-striking facility in New Orleans. This enduring design was originally created by Christian Gobrecht.
