In the late 1850s, the United States Mint introduced a dramatic departure from its traditional coinage designs with the Flying Eagle cent. This particular specimen from 1857, preserved in Extra Fine detail, represents a brief but highly influential era in American numismatic history. The series itself was remarkably short-lived, spanning only from 1856 to 1858. The obverse of the coin features a dynamic image of an eagle in full flight, a striking contrast to the Liberty portraits that dominated other denominations of the period. Surrounding the soaring bird is a curved legend, with the year 1857 anchored at the bottom. This design was created by James B. Longacre, who sought to capture a sense of national movement and freedom. On the reverse, the coin displays a detailed wreath enclosing the denomination, which is spelled out simply as ONE CENT. Though the metal content is predominantly copper, this specific issue was struck in a copper-nickel alloy, giving it a distinct composition and appearance compared to earlier pure copper cents. This piece was produced at the Philadelphia Mint, though it does not bear a mint mark, which was standard practice for the facility at the time.
