In the mid-nineteenth century, the San Francisco Mint was tasked with turning raw western gold into official United States coinage. Among the rarest survivors of this era is the 1859-S Liberty Head Gold Eagle. With a remarkably small original mintage of just 7,000 pieces, very few of these ten-dollar gold coins have survived the intervening decades, making any remaining specimen an extraordinary find for historical study. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, this coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty, her hair secured by a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the year 1859 anchored at the base. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle clutching arrows and an olive branch, encircled by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TEN D. Beneath the eagle, the distinct 'S' mintmark identifies its origin from the young branch mint in California. This particular specimen has survived in remarkable condition, certified in About Uncirculated 53 (AU-53) condition. Having escaped the melting pots and heavy circulation of the nineteenth century, it offers a tangible connection to the early years of Western minting.
