Introduced during a time of national upheaval, the short-lived United States two-cent piece remains a captivating chapter in American numismatics. Minted between 1864 and 1873, this copper coin represents a unique denomination born out of necessity and changing times. The examples from 1864 to 1872, preserved in Very Fine to Extra Fine condition, allow us to appreciate the intricate artistry of a bygone era. The obverse of the coin displays an ornate shield, which was created to symbolize national strength, protection, and the vital importance of unity. Arcing above this central shield is the historic inscription "IN GOD WE TRUST," marking the very first time this now-famous motto appeared on any circulating United States coinage. Below the shield, the year of mintage is clearly struck. On the reverse, the design transitions to a classic agricultural theme. A detailed, decorative wreath of wheat encircles the bold denomination, which is simply inscribed as "2 CENTS." Around the outer rim, the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" frame the entire composition, celebrating the nation's identity on a modest but highly significant copper coin.
